Can I load a document instead of pasting it?

Yes. A .docx file dropped on the text box keeps its paragraph breaks when the text is extracted, so sentences that end a paragraph are still recognised. Plain .txt and .md files work the same way.

It splits on a period, question mark or exclamation mark followed by whitespace or the end of the text. Requiring that whitespace is what stops "example.com" and other mid-word periods from registering as a break.

Does an abbreviation like "Dr." inflate the count?

Accepted Answer

No. Common abbreviations (Mr, Mrs, Dr, Prof, St, vs, etc, Inc, Ltd, e.g., i.e., a.m., p.m. and others) are recognised and their periods ignored, as are decimal numbers like 3.14 and ellipses. This is where the counter differs from a naive split.

Does it work for languages other than English?

Accepted Answer

It works with any text using standard Latin punctuation (., !, ?). Scripts with their own terminators, such as the Chinese full stop 。 or the Devanagari danda ।, are not detected, and the abbreviation list is English-specific.

Why is my sentence count lower than expected?

Accepted Answer

Usually because bullet points and headings carry no terminal punctuation, so they merge into the sentence around them. Text pasted from a PDF can also lose its line breaks, joining separate sentences together.
